A Long Tradition

The Springetts group of companies traces its origins to 1926 when Mr. H.L. (Harry) Springett came to Bowral with his family. The first Springetts enterprise was a mixed food business in Bong Bong Street. The present arcade is built over part of this site.

Incorporated in 1934, the company acquired land adjacent to the original business and erected a building housing a first class air-conditioned restaurant, and a ballroom catering for 300 people on the first floor.

Thus, for well over half a century, ‘Springetts’ has been central to both the business and social life of Bowral and the Highlands.

By 1940, at the untimely death of the founder, Springetts had expanded into soft drink and ice manufacturing, and a “model” bakery. Springetts drinks and bread were well known throughout the Highlands.

After the war, son Ted and his brothers Harry, Tony, and Bob restructured the business, part of which became Bowral’s first self-service grocery market.

In the late 50s a fire guttered the old bakery that lead the way for a new, latest technology bakery to be built – the first to distribute sliced bread in the district; and a Cold Storage and Freezing Plant which was to distribute the new consumer products – frozen foods – throughout the Highlands.

The soft drink plant – then Bowral Cordial Works – installed the latest automated filling machines, and was the first to bottle the famous ‘Passiona’ in Australia.

A grocery wholesaling business also supplied the trade in the Highlands.

Origins of the Arcade

In the late 1960s the companies were restructured again to allow for the building of the first Springetts Arcade, completed in 1972.

By this time a new business – the ‘Hot Canary’ Supermarket had already been trading for two years on part of the site. This Springetts retailing innovation – selling groceries singly or in bulk to the public at wholesale prices in a ‘no frills’ environment has since been emulated by other grocery retailers in Australia.

The new arcade had 20 shops and offices and was immediately a successful focus to the business district of Bowral.

In 1983, the Hot Canary Supermarket closed, and the property was completely redeveloped to open in 1984 as the current arcade with 50 shops and offices in an elegant atmosphere of old world charm.
